Because it doesn’t melt in the sun, it won’t stain other surfaces it comes in contact with, such as your surfboard bag, your car or your clothes. Also, Van Der Waal doesn’t get sticky or dirty, so your board is always clean.
Most surf wax bars are made with high environmental impact components such as oil. Since a surfer needs at least 1 bar of wax every month, Van Der Wall is a much “greener” solution than wax.
Van der Waal will ensures that your feet will not skid. Plus, our material gets a more rubberized texture when wet, increasing traction.
No matter whether you are surfing in cold or hot water, the traction Van der Waal is indifferent to the temperature of the water or the environment.
Although having a traction identical to the wax, Van der Waal is not aggressive to your skin and will not damage your wetsuit.
Your surfboard will look great! Van Der Waal is white transparent. So it won’t cover your board design or logos and your board will look exactly like it did when you bought it. Plus, protects your board from UV.
SURF THE SAME OLD WAY, BUT IN A GREENER WAY
With 2.7 millions surfers in the world (and 47% of them surfing more than once per week), the use of traditional wax (non-organic and non bio-degradable) has a huge impact on the oceans and atmosphere.
When applied, it has a similar weight to the wax (5gr / hexagon), so do not make your board heavier and does not compromise your surf.
We developed many tests and researches to get here.
In the end we came up to this material and shape. From the material in which Van der Waal is made, to its cut, are both essential to guarantee the same traction provided by wax

03/02/2015 - Carcevelos Beach on the day Martim broke is board
HOW IT STARTED
“When Martim, after broke is board in Carcavelos, bought a retro surfboard, started to talk about an old idea he had to find something that replace wax but without cover the board design, and without compromising traction during surfing.”
Afonso, Van der Waal founder and owner
AS IT LOOKS
Although it’s more expensive than 1 bar of surfwax, our tests have shown that Van der Waal lasts at least one year, if you surf 2 to 4 times a week, which makes it an alternative with a similar price to wax.
Imagine a wax bar that may last the same amount of time as your surfboard.
So, now that you are a Van der Waal'er...
READY FOR THE FIRST SESSION WITH VAN DER WAAL?
We just want to write down some notes on first sessions and mantainence:
You probably had a deep and lasting relationship with wax, and now you have something new between you and the board. So give time in order to you both get used to each other.
The same way you need to allow your feet to get familiar with the new material, you also have to give Van der Waal time. So be patient, mainly in the first dates, Van der Waal needs some time to absorb water to acquire it's rubbery texture for better traction (usually after the 20 minutes on the water).
And of course, it’s important for you to know how to preserve Van der Waal properties.
Although gives much less work than the wax, in order to keep the Van Der Wall superior grip, consider clean your board with fresh water from time to time, to clear the salt that can accumulate in the gaps
